Summary of Job Description:  The Senior Scientific Writer will organize, develop, write, edit, and produce scientific/technical documents related to ongoing research programs; incorporate scientific, engineering and technical content into publications as required. Works closely with Chief Scientist and other subject matter experts in the development and investigation of Physics and Science hypotheses. 

  • Conduct scientific research and investigation, e.g., open literature search as directed
  • Generate technical briefings as required
  • Generate White Papers as required
  • Conduct technical reviews for scientific merit

Assists in the delivery of technical documentation for periodic program reviews and milestones. Maintains document configuration control. Leads the review of documentation to ensure accuracy and clarity of technical information. Maintains data files and archives.

Essential Functions:

  • Works closely with subject matter experts in the development of scientific/technical documentation. Reviews and coordinates research data to produce scientific/technical documentation in order to support periodic program reviews and milestones. Interfaces with internal and external customers to investigate and resolve discrepancies or issues related to documentation content.
  • Investigates, compiles, and reviews all available source scientific/technical data and writes new or changed material in compliance with specifications. Researches subject matter as appropriate to create and verify accurate and usable content. Attends technical design reviews (as required) for information and data gathering.
  • Maintains data files (e.g., paper master copy, digital copy, CD-ROMs) to ensure that records are current and available. Maintains archival copies of previous data files.
  • Determines appropriate level of technical language to be used in documents (e.g., reports, presentations, technical papers) for target audience (e.g., scientific/engineering, military). Determines appropriate tone (e.g., conversational, advisory information, cautions, warnings, reading grade level, layout) and content for audience.
  • Assists customers in determining graphics requirements and coordinates with the graphics personnel to develop and deliver for inclusion in document. Provides direction to others in the work group and reviews their work for quality, accuracy, and completeness.
  • Participates in reviews to validate technical data and determine compliance with program and customer standards and requirements.
  • Using various software programs (e.g. Microsoft Office). Inputs technical data into an authoring and/or publishing system adhering to established standards and processes.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience Qualifications:

Technical Master's Degree or higher, PHD highly desired and ten or more years of related experience.  Experiences in broad areas of physics and sciences to include: Theoretical Physics, Geophysics, Atmospherics, Oceanography, Particle Physics, and etc.  Authorship/co-authorship of technical/scientific documentation.

Develops solutions to a variety of problems of moderate scope and complexity. Refers to practices and procedures for guidance. 

Discretion: 

Requires no instruction for routine work and general instructions for new lines of work or special assignments; supervision is limited. Participates in determining details of assignments to accomplish a wide range of objectives. Plans, schedules, and arranges own activities. Work is reviewed upon completion for adequacy in meeting objectives. 

Impact: 

Errors would normally result in loss of customer business, material, or equipment to resolve.

Contact: 

Interacts frequently with internal and external personnel and customers. Obtains or provides information on important or sensitive organization matters.

Clearance:

Top Secret clearance required, SCI Eligible
